Transorbital ultrasound measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter in normal rabbits

چکیده
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and reliability of transorbital ultrasound (TOUS) measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) in healthy rabbits and evaluate the influence of body weight and head circumference on the ONSD biometry. Methods: TOUS was performed to measure the ONSD 3 mm behind the optic disk in 31 adult male New Zealand White rabbits independently by two investigators. The values of the same animal measured by two investigators were compared with paired t test. Relationships between paired samples and the correlations of ONSD with body weight and head circumference were evaluated by Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The intra-observer reliability and agreement between two investigators were evaluated with Cronbach’s Alpha and Bland-Altman analysis, respectively. Results: Sixty-two optic nerves from 31 rabbits were well imaged by two observers. The mean ONSD was 1.17±0.01 mm (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.15-1.19 mm). No significant difference in ONSD was observed between left and right eyes and between two observers. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient between two observers was 0.81 and 0.84 for the right and left eye, respectively. Cronbach’s alpha was high (0.92~0.97). The difference between the values obtained by two investigators was 0.02. ONSD had no relationship with body weight (r=0.01, P=0.98) and head circumstance (r=0.02, P=0.56). Conclusion: ONSD measurement with TOUS is feasible and reliable in rabbits, which provides evidence on diagnosis of disorders affecting ONSD.

Comparative study measuring optic nerve sheath diameter by transorbital ultrasound in healthy women, pregnant women and pregnant with preeclampsia / eclampsia
Introduction Preeclampsia / eclampsia is a potentially serious disease associated with maternal complications, including neurological. In patients with increased intracranial pressure, the diameter of the optic nerve sheath increases because of its close association with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Her measurements using ultrasound transorbital have shown correlation with increased intracr...
متن کاملTransorbital sonography in acute optic neuritis: a case-control study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Acute unilateral optic neuritis is associated with a thickening of the retrobulbar portion of the optic nerve as revealed by transorbital sonography, but no comparison has been made between nerve sheath diameter and optic nerve diameter in patients with acute optic neuritis versus healthy controls. We evaluated optic nerve sheath diameter and optic nerve diameter in patie...
متن کاملTransorbital Sonographic Evaluation of Normal Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter in Healthy Volunteers in Bangladesh
INTRODUCTION Measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) by ultrasound is increasingly used as a marker to detect raised intracranial pressure (ICP). ONSD varies with age and there is no clear consensus between studies for an upper limit of normal. Knowledge of normal ONSD in a healthy population is essential to interpret this measurement. METHODS In a prospective observational study, O...
متن کاملPulsatile Dynamics of the Optic Nerve Sheath and Intracranial Pressure: An Exploratory In Vivo Investigation
BACKGROUND Raised intracranial pressure (ICP) may lead to increased stiffness of the optic nerve sheath (ONS). OBJECTIVE To develop a method for analyzing ONS dynamics from transorbital ultrasound and investigate a potential difference between patients with raised ICP vs normal ICP. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed data from 16 patients (≤12 years old) for whom ultrasound image sequences...
متن کاملEffect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters
Background :There is not any data available about the effect of high bar pressure condition on intracranial pressure. In this study, the effect of diving on the optic nerve and sheath diameters as non-invasive markers of intracranial pressure has been investigated. Methods : Twenty professional male divers from twenty one volunteers were chosen for this cross-sectional study. Only one perso...
